Landfill
Methane Outreach Program (LMOP)
This program is administered by
United States Environmental Protection Agency and it has
a multiple benefit to our society. It is a voluntary assistance and partnership
program that promotes the use of landfill gas as a renewable, green energy
source. Landfill gas is the natural by-product of the decomposition of solid
waste in landfills and is comprised primarily of carbon dioxide and methane. By
preventing emissions of methane (a powerful greenhouse gas) through the
development of landfill gas energy projects, LMOP helps businesses, states,
energy providers, and communities protect the environment and build a
sustainable future. Some of the benefits of LMOP are listed below:
Environmental
Benefit: LMOP
reduces smog, odor and greenhouse gas emissions. Landfill gas is widely
recognized as a valuable green power resource. Landfill gas is already included
in over 30 green pricing programs, per DOE's National
Renewable Energy Laboratory.
Economic Benefit of Landfill
gas energy projects is in creating jobs associated with the design,
construction, and operation of energy recovery systems.
Community Benefit:
Landfill gas energy projects help ensure that local landfills are well managed
and make the area around the site a better place to live.
Energy
Benefit: Landfill gas is a reliable and renewable fuel source that
reduces our reliance on fossil fuels. Landfill gas is also the only renewable
that directly reduces pollution to the atmosphere. Since LFG occurs naturally,
by collecting and converting it to energy, you are putting to use a fuel source
that would otherwise have been wasted. Landfill gas energy projects are
available to generate electricity over 90 percent of the time, 24 hours a day, 7
days a week.
Current Projects
U.S. EPA's LMOP program operates about 500
landfill gas (LFG) energy projects in the
United States
. These projects generate approximately 11 billion kilowatt-hours of
electricity per year and deliver 236 million cubic feet per day of LFG to
direct-use applications. EPA estimates that approximately 535 additional
landfills present attractive opportunities for project development. For list of
